Lake Placid (USA) World Cup 18th January 2014

Lake Placid, New York State (USA) plays host to the last aerial event of the World Cup tour before the athletes head to Russia for the Winter Olympic Games. Taking place just the day before the deadline for entries to Sochi 2014, this is the last event in which athletes can qualify for the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi 2014 and the event that everyone wants to win in order to stake their claim for Olympic gold.

The World Cup action will be held at night under the lights at the Olympic Jumping Centre where the dedicated aerials site nestles alongside the Olympic 70m and 90m Jumping hills. Bring your mittens, it’s usually a chilly affair!

Great Britain will be represented by Harry Gillam and Lloyd Wallace. Lloyd’s father Robin Wallace, who himself jumped on the site years ago will be there to support them both as coach/team leader, so the lads can concentrate fully on their jumps. Robin says:

I have fond memories of jumping in Lake Placid so it’s going to be great to back there. There’s always a very special atmosphere and a huge appreciative crowd.

The anticipation and added pressure of Olympic qualification spots up for grabs will only add to the excitement. It’s quite fitting that an Olympic venue from the past has the chance to decide which athletes attend the next games.
